Overview
Sonar models look things up on the web by themselves and cite sources. Because of that, Loom does not send them its own tools, and they do not read photos or PDFs.
Get a key
- 1Go to console.perplexity.ai and create an API group (your workspace). Any name will do.
- 2In Billing, add a payment method and buy credit. You are not charged until you use it.
- 3Open API Keys and choose Generate API Key.
- 4Copy the key (it starts with
pplx-). It is shown once.
Cost. Prepaid credit plus a small per-request charge for search. A Perplexity Pro subscription is billed separately and does not give API credit.
Add it to Loom
- 1Open Loom, then Providers in the menu, and choose Add provider.
- 2Pick Perplexity (the search box finds it).
- 3Fill in the fields in the table below.
- 4Choose Connect. Loom checks the key and says how many models it found. If it cannot check, it says so, and you can Save anyway and try a message.
- 5Open the model chip below the message box and pick a model.

Good to know
Perplexity moved Sonar to a newer API on 27 September 2026. Loom uses the documented
/v1/sonar path. If it ever answers 404, add Perplexity as a Custom provider with the address from their docs.If something goes wrong
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| 401 | Check the key, and that the API group has credit. |
| The reply has no sources | Ask it to cite sources, or pick a larger Sonar model. |
