Overview
Loom can give the model a search tool and a page reader. You choose the search service and bring its key (or point Loom at your own SearXNG). Every page open asks you first, and addresses on your own network are blocked.
Set it up in Settings → Web search. Then switch search on or off for a chat from the + menu.
Get a key: Brave Search
- 1Register at api-dashboard.search.brave.com. This is separate from the Brave browser.
- 2Brave asks for a card, even for free use, as an anti-fraud measure. Search and Answers are separate plans, each with a monthly free credit; check the dashboard for the current amount.
- 3Pick the Search plan, open API Keys and generate a subscription token.
- 4In Loom choose Brave and paste the token. Loom sends it in the header Brave expects.
Get a key: Tavily
- 1Sign in at app.tavily.com. The free plan includes a monthly allowance of credits and needs no card.
- 2Copy an API key from the dashboard (it starts with
tvly-). - 3In Loom choose Tavily and paste it. A basic search uses one credit.
Get a key: SearXNG (your own)
- 1Run a SearXNG server (for example with Docker).
- 2In its
settings.yml, addjsontosearch.formatsand setserver.limiter: false, then restart it. Without JSON enabled you get a 403 or HTML. - 3Test it:
curl "http://your-server:8080/search?q=test&format=json"should return JSON. - 4In Loom choose SearXNG and enter the Server address.
In Loom
- Press Test search. Loom runs a real search and tells you how many results came back.
- Let the model open pages lets it read a page you or the search points to. Ask before opening a page keeps you in control; leave it on unless you trust the chat.
Good to know
Perplexity’s Sonar models search by themselves, so you do not need this for them.
If something goes wrong
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Working · 0 results” | The service answered but found nothing, or the key is for a different plan. |
| SearXNG returns 403 | JSON is not enabled in its settings.yml, or the limiter is on. |
| The model never searches | Search must be switched on for the chat in the + menu, and the model must support tools. |
